Adding text as 3D manipulable object

Hello community!

First of all, what a great app! I’m really enjoying this and can’t wait to use it with my students.

I was wondering if there’s a way to add text (outside of bottom comments or instructions, or labels) so that it can be manipulated (and not placed letter by letter)?

I’d like to write a sentence and pull it apart to highlight grammar and language features for a language class.

I’m really excited to give this a try!

Thanks in advance.

Hi dmona21, welcome to the community!

Really great idea, we are planning on implementing dynamic 3D text but currently it isn’t available yet.

Until it’s ready, do you have any experience using Blender? It’s a free program that can be used to generate 3D text. You can download it here: https://www.blender.org/download/releases/2-80/

There is a really good tutorial about how to make 3D texture in Blender 2.8 below:

If you run into any issues don’t hesitate to ask.

What words / sentences were you planning on using in your class?

Hey Dmona I’ve used blender before!
If you want i could make the text into objects and send you the file. What did you want them to say?

Hi @dmona21,
We are making a tool that will help you make your 3D text.
You’ll be able to type what you want and it will make 3d models for you to use. It will take a few days to develop but as soon as it is ready we will share it with you.

Hi @dmona21

We’ve built a 3D text tool to convert any text into 3D text.
To make the tool work you’ll need the following:

  1. Blender 2.8 installed

  2. The “Text_tool_template” from us. Here is a link
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/pyssbt7269hvu9j/Text_tool_template.blend?dl=0

  3. File with your text (.txt), if your text is more than one row

The first time you open “Text_tool_template” you will see a warning.
Warning

Choose “Permanently allow execution of scripts” and “Allow Execution”.
Warning_solution

After that you will see the Text Tool menu

Here is a video how to use it.
For .TXT file

One line text option

When “Build and Export 3D text” is pressed, it will create a .OBJ (3D Object) file. The OBJ file will be named the same as the text file you choose and also saved in the same location on your computer.

When “Build and Export 3D text from text box” is pressed, it will again create a .OBJ file. In this method you can choose where and what the file is called by pressing the folder Icon next to “Export to and Name your file:”. If you do not choose a name and file location and try to export a .OBJ file will be made in the same location as the Text_tool_template.blender file with the name “3D_text.OBJ”.

Once you have your 3D text, import it into the Workshop. Click on the link below to see how.

Hi mila I tried out your text tool!
It worked well, I like that the words came out as their own objects.

You can now add text anywhere with text boxes.

Use a text box to add a title, custom annotations, or detailed information panels anywhere in your Jigs. Text works across desktop, mobile, and the web, and behaves like any 3D object in JigSpace, so you can get up close and move around it. Best of all, you can edit text in seconds.
